Dippers

Dippers can be found throughout the UK, with the Peak District offering numerous opportunities to see and photograph these beautiful birds. These charismatic birds are a delight to watch and photograph and often share the waterways with Kingfishers, Water voles, wagtails and various other water birds. Every day is different but your patience is often rewarded with close encounters at a moments notice.

Exciting throughout the year

Each season brings different opportunities with these birds, with spring and summer offering the opportunity to see their young fledging, autumn bringing beautiful warm colours and winter with the prospect of ice and mist lifting from the rivers.

Suitable for all photographers

Whilst it won’t hurt to have a basic understanding of your camera, this workshop can be tailored to all levels and capabilities.

Groups or individuals welcome

These workshops are run on a 1-2-1 basis, however groups can be arranged. Group sizes are limited to 4 to ensure everyone receives 1-2-1 support and tuition throughout the day whilst still being able to capture some great images and minimising disturbance to the birds.

  • What lens / focal length will you need?

    500mm+ recommended. I have OM System equipment available to loan at no extra cost on the day if needed.

  • Is this workshop weather dependant?

    This workshop is rarely postponed due to the weather as there’s opportunities in nearly all conditions.

  • What will I need to bring?

    Packed lunch & water.
    Waterproof, layered, warm clothing.
    Sturdy walking boots.

  • How long is this workshop?

    This is a full day workshop which lasts up to 7 hours.

I had a fantastic day photographing dippers in the Peak District with Tesni Ward. It was a brilliant experience from start to finish — I picked up loads of useful tips for using my camera in the field and came away with some images I’m really proud of. The shooting location she selected was perfect, not just for the dippers but we also saw lots of other things of interest on and around the river. Tesni was excellent company: knowledgeable, patient, and full of fascinating insights about the local flora and fauna. Her passion for nature, wildlife and photography really shines through. It was a day full of learning, laughter, and great photography — though I don’t think I’ll be tasting the sloes again!

In my opinion, repeat business is a very sound measure of quality products and services. It’s certainly the case that Tesni Ward has a substantial number of returning photo clients, including me in early May 2024. Her energy and commitment to client success is astonishing. I have been on two trips with Tesni and have just booked a third because Tesni’s technical knowledge and understanding of her subjects means a high chance of returning with some decent images. The small group sizes mean that everyone gets as much attention as they want or need and there is little chance of being in each other’s way. I have no hesitation in recommending Tesni as a guide and mentor.
